Cull 'firewall' planned between Cooley and border

The Minister for Agriculture has announced plans to extend the slaughtering zone in the Cooley Peninsula in a bid to control foot-and-mouth disease.

More than 10,000 sheep and 500 cattle have already been culled in the 3km zone, which is likely to be extended to create a 'firewall' between the zone and the border.

In addition to the Co Louth cull at the weekend, hundreds of animals were slaughtered in counties Meath, Carlow, Laois and Wexford as a precautionary measure.
