Seven years for Cork broker accused of insurance fraud

A former insurance broker has been jailed for seven years at Cork Circuit Criminal Court today for defrauding his customers.

37-year-old Andrew Casey had pleaded guilty to a total of fifteen offences in which customers were defrauded of over £250,000.

In all there were seven counts of forgery and eight counts of fraudulent conversion concerning a total of IR£264,000 made up of individual sums of between £10 and £100,000.

The money should have been invested with companies such as Norwich Union, Irish Life and Permanent and Canada Life. Instead, Casey, who operated from a premises at 119 Patrick Street, Cork, used the money for himself.

When he was last before the court in November, the matter was adjourned until today to allow more compensation to be paid.

The court heard today that IR£73,000 had been paid and that around IR£100,000 more had been made available through the Irish Brokers Association.

Jailing Casey for seven years, Judge A.D. Murphy described the offences as very serious.
