Plans to be lodged for €2m project in Crosshaven

Planning is expected to be lodged within the next two months for a major parkland and carpark development in the heart of Crosshaven village in Cork.

The project, understood to have been in planning for a number of months, is expected to have a price tag of up to €2m, though details of the funding mechanism are not believed to have been fully agreed as yet.

It is expected that once it gets the green light, part of the shoreline will be in-filled to make way for the development.

Locals say that if the plans go ahead it will be the biggest tourist development to happen in the harbour area since Spike Island.

Initial details of the project emerged last night at River’s End cafe at the launch of the village’s latest Crosshaven Challenge Triathlon, which is due to take place on September 17.

That event, which is sponsored by Bernard Lynch of the local Centra, and who is also a driver of the new Crosshaven development, accommodated more than 300 tri-athletes last year, making it one of the most successful triathlons in the country.

The triathlon consists of a 500m swim, 10km cycle, and a 5km run.

All proceeds are pumped into local community initiatives.

At last night’s launch, local councillor Seamus McGrath welcomed the new development pointing out that visitor numbers to Crosshaven are at record levels.

Noel Condon, chairman of the local development committee, said he was delighted at news of the development.

It is understood the Royal Cork Yacht Club also has major plans in progress for the area.

It is expected to welcome substantially higher numbers for the Volvo Cork Week next month, thanks to more overseas entrants.
