Catholics should be as proud of their faith as GAA supporters are of their jersey, Tyrone manager Mickey Harte told a religious conference in Limerick. Catholics tend to be too apologetic, he said, and should not be swayed by scandals perpetrated by a very small minority of clergy.

Mr Harte recalled how his faith helped him cope with the deaths of his daughter Michaela and his two brothers within a three- month period, five years ago.

He said: “Life wasn’t easy. You could never have dealt with this on your own. You had to have faith. There had to have been something greater to get you through.
