Suspect in fatal Carlow stabbing was known to the victim
The 46-year-old victim was discovered by gardaí inside a house in Frederick Avenue, a quiet, settled estate near the Athy Road.
The victim, from Carlow town and who has been named locally, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man in his early 20s was arrested and taken to Carlow Garda Station for questioning. The house and grounds were sealed off pending the arrival of the state pathologist.
A forensic examination was also carried out in a bid to determine what occurred and to gather evidence. It was not clear if a weapon was found.
A Garda spokesman said: “At approximately 1.30pm gardaí were called to a house on Frederick Avenue after a report of a male being stabbed. On arrival, gardaí discovered a 46-year-old male seriously injured and he was later pronounced dead.
“A male in his 20s was arrested a short time later and he is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Carlow Garda Station.”
Local sources said the deceased was well known in Carlow. It is understood he is from the Roncalli area, in the old part of the town.
The deceased’s parents are also well known and, according to sources, well liked.
It is thought the stabbing took place in rented accommodation in what is a large, extended property on Frederick Avenue.
Some sources said the flat may have been at some stage rented by the deceased’s ex-partner, also from the town.
Gardaí are not thought to be looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbing.
