Armed standoff in Tallaght triggered by breakup

The 46-year-old criminal, who has convictions for false imprisonment and assault causing harm, voluntarily agreed to give himself up at 4.30pm yesterday after a tense 13-hour standoff with gardaí.

Local gardaí and elite officers from the Emergency Response Unit descended on Deerpark Estate, in Tallaght, after a woman informed them of a domestic incident at around 2.30am.

The man, from Ballyfermot, is understood to have two teenage children with his ex-partner.

Negotiators from the Special Detective Unit were also dispatched to the estate.

Residents in neighbouring and adjacent apartments and houses were carefully evacuated by gardaí.

The man, who was on his own in his apartment in Deerpark Manor, fired up to 30 blasts “periodically” and “indiscriminately” from a double-barrelled shotgun between 3am and noon.

Gardaí said that no one was injured from the shots, which were not aimed at anyone.

Garda negotiators patiently talked the man down and he voluntarily surrendered at 4.30pm. He was arrested and detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Detectives believe the shooting was sparked by a domestic breakup, after which he barricaded himself into the apartment and made threats.
