Penneys hat and gloves thief ‘goes a bit crazy once a month’

Dennis Healy, solicitor, said at Cork District Court yesterday: “At a certain time every month she goes a bit crazy in the head and doesn’t know what she is doing.”
Judge Leo Malone said he was not a doctor and did not know what to say to that.
Mr Healy said he could not explain it any further but that this what the accused had told him.
The Romanian woman, Mireala Tinichigiu, aged 27, living in Tubercurrry, Co Sligo, visited Cork with a view to checking out if it would be a better place for her to live and work.
Insp Adrian Gamble said the accused went to Penneys on Patrick St in Cork on November 18, and put a hat and gloves into the hood of a buggy. She paid for other items but failed to pay for the hat and gloves.
Mr Healy said the accused had no intention of stealing the items and was most embarrassed when she discovered she had walked out of the shop without paying for the items.
Yesterday, Tinichigiu, of 63 Springvale, Tubbercurry, pleaded guilty at Cork District Court to a charge of stealing the items.
Mr Healy said she had no previous convictions.
Because of the absence of previous convictions, the judge said he would give the accused the benefit of a dismissal under the Probation of Offenders Act.
