A woman was yesterday charged at Limerick District Court with the murder of a pensioner on November 10, 2013.

Mary Lynch, aged 41, with an address at a basement apartment in 21 Upper Cecil Street, Limerick, was remanded in custody by Judge Marian O’Leary, with a recommendation she receive medical and psychiatric treatment.

Det Sgt Padraic Byrnes, said the accused replied: “Not guilty”, when he charged her with the murder of Paddy Redmond, aged 65.

Det Sgt Byrnes said he arrested Ms Lynch at Cecil Steet at 7.20pm on Sunday.

The murder is alleged to have happened at an apartment at Mount Kennett, Dock Road, Limerick, where Mr Redmond resided.

John Devane, solicitor for Ms Lynch, said he would apply for bail in the High Court next Monday and agreed to Ms Lynch being remanded in custody to today’s sitting of Limerick District Court.

Mr Devane said Ms Lynch was undergoing psychiatric treatment and receiving strong medication.

Judge O’Leary agreed to recommend she receive any medical assistance necessary while in custody.

She will appear via video link from Limerick prison at today’s sitting, on the application of Sgt Donal Cronin.

Paddy Redmond received a single stab wound while he was in an apartment adjacent to his own. Gardaí were called and paramedics tried to save him. He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he died.

Mr Redmond, a native of Dublin, had lived at a number of addresses in Limerick in the years prior to his death. He moved to an apartment in Mount Kennett in 2012.

He was separated from his wife with whom he had three grown up children.
