Impact of racism revealed by social media campaign

Nasc, the Irish Immigrant Support Centre, launched an anti-racism social media campaign yesterday for the month of September.

Impact of racism revealed by social media campaign

The campaign, #EverydayRacism — 30 Days of Action will use social media to raise awareness of the impact of racism on those who experience and witness it.

Events throughout the month will include the release of the organisation’s anti-racism video and poster campaigns, a pilot training programme with gardaí in Cork, as well as marking the European Day of Action against Islamophobia.

“We are organising this campaign to raise awareness about how racism impacts all of us, all of the time,” said Nasc CEO Fiona Finn. “It is a way for people who have experienced racism, or witnessed someone else experiencing it, to speak out.

“During the 30 Days of Action, Nasc will be launching a new anti-racism video developed and produced with a group of young people of Irish and migrant backgrounds. We will also be launching a new poster campaign at the end of the month to encourage people to report racist incidents to Nasc.

“We are calling on people — individuals, organisations, community groups, public officials — to show that racism isn’t tolerated in Cork by getting involved in the social-media campaign and using the ‘everydayracism’ hashtag as much as they can.”

Nasc’s anti-racism training for gardaí will be held in conjunction with Cork Community Policing and the Garda Racial, Intercultural and Diversity Office.

“We are very excited to be working closely with An Garda Síochána to develop anti-racism training for gardaí that focuses on tackling discriminatory ethnic profiling of migrant communities,” said Ms Finn.

The #EverydayRacism — 30 Days of Action public awareness campaign forms part of Nasc’s Cork City Social Inclusion Project. The project is co-financed by the European Commission under the European Integration Fund and is supported by the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration in the Department of Justice and Equality, and Pobal.
