A lot more people have braved a bucket of cold water and ice to help raise awareness and funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

#IceBucketChallenge: Paul O’Connell and Roy Keane treated to icy reception

Already the IMNDA has raised more than €100,000 as a result of the international phenomenon that has spread on social media and gained supported from figures as diverse as George W Bush, the author Stephen King and members of One Direction.

Yesterday Roy Keane was doused at Aston Villa’s training ground. Paul O’Connell accepted the demand made of him by the chief executive of the IMNDA Aisling Farrell and was soaked by several buckets.

Miriam O’Callaghan has been pencilled in to close her show under a bucket of cold water tonight, if €2,000 can be raised for the charity.

Paul Byrne of TV3 and Irish Examiner journalist Eoin English got saturated by members of Cork City Fire brigade yesterday.

Newstalk broadcaster Pat Kenny completed the task with the instruction to colleagues “do it now” and was joined in the challenge by fellow presenter Jonathan Healy.

In Limerick head of one of the biggest Garda divisions in the country Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan had 110 litres of ice cold water thrown over him while sitting on the steps outside Henry Street Garda Station yesterday.

After his soaking he said he was delighted to support the cause and challenged Irish Women’s rugby star Niamh Briggs — who is also a Garda based in Limerick — to take up the dousing next.

He also called out Limerick born businessman JP McManus and the mayor of Limerick Fine Gael Councillor Michael Sheahan.

“My daughter works in a hospital and has cared for people with this illness so I was aware of it. However, she was reluctant to nominate me,” Chief Supt Sheahan said.

“I was delighted to take up the challenge. I am no stranger to water and I enjoyed it. It’s a great cause,” he added.

The craze began in America with participants urged to donate to support motor neurone-related charities and nominate three people to follow.
