Prison officers saddle up for brain injury charity

Having taken off from Malin Head, the northernmost tip of the island on Monday, the 14-strong team are due at Mizen Head tomorrow.

The group, mainly made up of officers from Limerick Prison, are raising funds and publicity for Limerick-based charity Ian’s Trust. The trust was established to support families of children who suffer from acquired brain injury.

It was set up in memory of Ian ‘Bean’ Cusack who passed away on August 17, 2012, aged nine. On September 25, 2008, Ian’s life changed forever when he suffered a very severe acquired brain injury following a road traffic accident.

The trust provides financial support for families of children with acquired brain injury during their hospital stay and beyond.

“It’s part fundraising and part publicity,” said Olive O’Connor, a prison officer from Limerick.

She has been part-cycling the 705km journey and travelling the rest on one of two motorbikes escorting the group.

A total of six of the group are cycling the full length, with the rest sharing the arduous route. Some of the latter group are from the Limerick Triathlon Club.

The trip was organised by the Limerick Prison 1821 cycling club, which references when the jail was built.
