Online project aims to document impact of recession and austerity
The project — an online collaboration between the Irish Examiner and the Cork Institute of Technology — features 12 essays which document the impact of the recession and austerity on a diverse range of people.
The case studies — developed and researched by public relations and journalism students from CIT — document a variety of societal issues such as homelessness, unemployment, abandoned animals, and emigration.
Others explore personal stories of hardship but also uplifting tales of those who manage to overcome that challenge.
All of the stories were developed by master’s students in CIT’s department of media communications.
Responding to the initiative, lecturer in multimedia production Anne-Marie Green said she was delighted to be part of a project that allowed students to develop and showcase the research and storytelling skills required for their future professions.
“The students’ project was to create a photo essay exploring issues, both positive and negative, relating to the recession.
“The essays cover a diverse range of subjects reflecting the interests and motivations of each individual student.
“Hopefully they are the first of many such collaborations with the Irish Examiner in the future.”
The Irish Examiner’s executive editor for news and digital, Dolan O’Hagan, welcomed the collaboration.
“This project highlights, once again, how the unique qualities and dynamism of all our news platforms — from print to digital — in tandem with new and emerging story telling techniques will allow us to better deliver on our core missions as a news media company.
“Key among those core missions is providing quality and engaging content which ultimately gives voice to ordinary people and promotes a greater and a more informed understanding among us all of the central issues of the day. No one can deny this project does just that.”
