Nicole to pick up West Cork Youth Award
Nicole Corkery, from Belgooly was one of 141 people nominated for the West Cork Garda Youth Awards. This Friday night the 15-year-old-year will be presented by Chief Superintendent Tom Hayes with an award for her work in promoting positive mental health.
Nicole was one of the main drivers of her Foróige Club’s project on positive mental health.
The initiative was so successful that the club made it to the finals of TV3 Ireland’s Top Teens contest and Nicole was later interviewed by Pat Kenny for his radio show.
She was one of a substantial number of young people nominated for the 18th West Cork Garda Youth Awards. The large number of nominations demonstrates the contribution being made to their community by the youth of West Cork, according to Inspector Brendan Fogarty of Bandon Garda Station:
“Each year we are consistently impressed and humbled by the sacrifices made by these young people, as they contribute to their community, both at a local level, and also in wider areas. The award winners are truly worthy, but the standard of nominations in general was at a very high level,” he said, adding that An Garda Síochána wanted to pay tribute to SuperValu for its continued sponsorship of the awards.
In all 16 awards — 15 youth awards as well as an award marking an adult’s outstanding contribution to youth — will be presented at the ceremony at Riverside Park Hotel in Macroom at 8pm next Friday.
The awards will be presented to outstanding young people between the ages of 14 and 21 from all over the West Cork region who have made significant contributions to their community in everything from raising money for Marymount Hospice and helping to upgrade a community kitchen to visiting and entertaining the sick and the elderly.
It is important to recognise that all the nominees benefit from participation in the Garda Youth Awards, said spokesman Garda Damian White.
“All other nominees will receive a certificate signed by their local superintendent to highlight their nomination. Adding this to any CV will most definitely enhance it,” he pointed out.
