Bord Pleanála backs Lidl store

An Bord Pleanála has rejected its own inspector’s recommendation and also overturned a town council decision to approve planning for a proposed Lidl supermarket in Clonakilty, Co Cork.

Bord Pleanála backs Lidl store

The board ruled out concerns over pedestrian safety and traffic congestion and approved the Lidl Ireland retail store at Inchydoney Rd.

The development will see the demolition of an existing agricultural/commercial building, which will be replaced by a new single-storey store with a retail sales area of 1,065sq m.

Significantly, rival German retail firm Aldi also secured planning for a site close by, in the former GAA grounds. The Aldi planning is still ‘live’, but the proposed site is in receivership.

Meanwhile, the Lidl store is likely to progress shortly in a town which has Dunnes and SuperValu stores on prominent sites on the western and eastern approaches respectively, along with a Spar nearby and other independent retail stores.

Permission for the Lidl store had been refused by Clonakilty Town Council in November. An appeal was made and the An Bord Pleanála’s inspector’s report also recommended refusal, on traffic grounds.

The development will consist of a licensed discount food store, and 82 parking spaces. Works will include upgrading the site entrance for vehicles and pedestrians along the Inchydoney Rd as well as upgrading the junction at Casement St on the N71.

Independent councillor Anthony McDermott welcomed the move. The chamber of commerce said it does not comment on planning applications.
