Burglar jailed after app in stolen phone tracked him
Glen Muldoon, aged 20, stole an iPhone and laptop in the first house he burgled. When the couple noticed that the phone had been taken, they started the app on a second laptop and were able to pinpoint the location of the phone.
Muldoon, of Kiltalown Hill, Tallaght, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the three burglaries in Grange Abbey Crescent, Donaghmede, on Nov 13, 2011. He has 53 previous convictions.
Garda Ronan Smith told Gerardine Small, prosecuting, Muldoon had broken into two other houses in the estate within a few minutes.
The man in the second house had been sleeping on the couch when he woke up to a shadow passing by the kitchen door. He thought nothing of it and fell back asleep.
Garda Smith said it was not until the following morning that the man noticed his wallet was missing. He found the wallet sitting by his garden wall. His cash, €75, was gone from it but all his cards were still there.
The man in the third house had also been asleep on the couch when he woke up and noticed that his front door was open. He saw a man standing in the driveway and followed the man.
Garda Smith said the man was then passed by a black BMW. The car pulled up outside another house in the estate and the driver was going in when the man noticed it was Muldoon.
Muldoon saw the man, returned to the BMW and drove off at speed. The man supplied gardaí with a description of the car.
Garda Smith said in the meantime the station had received a call from the couple giving the location of the stolen phone in the Belfry Manor Estate, Citywest.
They arrived at the scene and spotted Muldoon sitting in the BMW. He jumped out of the car when he saw the gardaí but was arrested in a nearby garden shed.
He made full admissions following his arrest.
Garda Smith agreed with Luigi Rea, defending, that his client is now drug free.
