Still haven’t found what I’m asking for my car
However, despite the allure of driving around town in a motor that once belonged to Bono, this is one set of rock‘n’roll wheels that no-one seems to want.
The 33-year-old silver Mercedes 450SEL is kitted out with a leather cow-hide interior and €15,000 worth of sound equipment.
Three years ago, owner David Lawlor of Fibber Magees’ pub fame was selling the car for €90,000 on eBay.
Now it’s back up on eBay at less than half that price. But, so far, there are no bids with less than a day left on the sale.
The vehicle, which has featured in U2 videos such as Rattle and Hum and One , is the first car Bono bought after the band hit the big time with their debut album, Boy.
The car’s log-book even has Bono’s real name, Paul Hewson, marked in it.
The Merc, which has 170km on the clock, was donated by the singer in 2006 to a charity auction to raise funds for Ethiopia. It was snapped up by the Pepsi Cola company for £61,000 (€70,000). Since then, it has changed hands on several occasions.
The drinks giant passed it to Boyzone’s Keith Duffy two years later when he was holding a fundraiser for autism charities. On that occasion, Cork-based businessman Stuart Matthews bought it. In 2006, Mr Lawlor bought it.
Mr Lawlor admitted that when he first put the car up for auction three years, it needed a lot of work.
“When I bought it, it was full of rust and everything,” he said. “I spent around €20,000 restoring it. I’ve had everything restored.”
