Activists want dog pound removed from CSPCA

Animal rights activists have called for Cork City’s dog pound service to be removed from the under-fire Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA) and put out to public tender.

Almost 80 protesters, many with their pet dogs, gathered outside Cork City Hall last night to voice concerns about what they said are ongoing animal welfare issues at the CSPCA’s facility in Mahon.

Organiser Mary McCarthy, of the Friends of the Animals in CSPCA group, dismissed assurances from city council officials that improvements are under way at the CSPCA’s facility.

“We will stage more protests until we get what we want — we want the pound operations put out to public tender,” she said.

They also called for more public representation on the board of the CSPCA, and for an increase in veterinary spot-checks.

The society receives public money to operate a dog warden and dog pound service for Cork City Council.

Following a series of complaints, Cork City Council ordered an independent investigation into the CSPCA.

It exposed serious deficiencies in relation to the Control of Dogs Act.

Last night, a council spokesman said several recommendations have been implemented, including the appointment of a manager, and improvements to the buildings.
