Raise a beer to Cork’s laneways
A number of beers named after some of the city’s least-known lanes will shortly go on sale and will also provide tipplers with a geography lesson.
“When naming our beers we took inspiration from the city around us,” said brewer Conrad Howard.
“Cork is a city that is known for its fascinating streets and alleyways, many of which have survived from medieval times.
“The GPS co-ordinates are provided on each bottle-label to show the location of the lane.”
Mr Howard has brewed the beers named after Elbow, Angel, and Wisdom lanes, the locations of which may not be known by many Corkonians.
The beers will be on sale at Blackrock Castle cafe and Market Lane restaurant, which are operated by Mr Howard, at Bradley’s on North Main St, and at the Orsa restaurant which will open on Pembroke St next month.
Angel Stout is malty in flavour with a full-bodied, smooth finish. It is named after Angel Lane situated close to Adelaide St at the North Gate Bridge end of North Main St.
Elbow Lager owes its flavour to barley malt and a generous hop bitterness. It is called after Elbow Lane, off Cook St.
Wisdom Ale is a single-malt brown ale. It is named after Wisdom Lane, which is between 42 and 43 North Main St.
Mr Howard said the beers are brewed according to the German purity law.
