G-Mac chips in to help ‘fix’ Crumlin
McDowell, who aids charities north and south of the border and in the US through his G-Mac Foundation, explained that the young patients requiring treatment in the hospital “deserve quality facilities to match the world class care that they receive”.
Earlier this year, Crumlin’s medical and research foundation launched an appeal for €8m in funding to help renovate its cancer ward and construct a state of the art cardiac facility.
Speaking on the eve of the US Open in San Francisco, 2010 champion McDowell said: “I have been a supporter of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and the Children’s Medical & Research foundation since early last year. The work that their staff undertakes for sick children, from all over the island of Ireland, is incredible. I was invited to visit Crumlin last year and I witnessed first hand the space restrictions, outdated conditions and pressure that the staff, patients and families face on the cardiac ward.
“Through my G-Mac Foundation, I wanted to help and play my part in trying to improve things at the cardiac unit. The children using the hospital deserve quality facilities to match the world class care that they receive.
“We are committed to supporting Crumlin’s effort to raise funds to build a new cardiac unit, so for this reason we want to make this donation.”
Joe Quinsey, chief executive of the & foundation, said Graeme McDowell’s generosity is a massive boost to their fundraising goals.
“Graeme McDowell’s support and commitment means the world to our staff, patients and their families. We have raised over a half million euro and we are thrilled with the response we have received but we continue to need to call on the generous spirit of the Irish nation to deliver for our little patients.”
Dr Orla Franklin, consultant paediatric cardiologist, also welcomed the support. “His support for our new unit is invaluable”.
