Search for missing student to resume
Around 400 volunteers took part in a major search along the river yesterday for the UCC student who has been missing since the early hours of last Friday.
Caolan Mulrooney, aged 18, was last seen at around 1am on December 2 crossing South Gate Bridge in Cork city, going in the direction of French’s Quay.
He is six feet tall, has light brown hair and has a strong build. When last seen, he was wearing a blue and white stripped shirt and blue jeans.
Search co-ordinator Sgt Ben Flahive, from Anglesea Street Garda station in Cork, said he was overwhelmed by the response from the public.
“People have really got behind it. Caolan is an extremely popular guy and a talented sportsman.
“We are overwhelmed with the support,” he said.
Volunteers, divers from the Navy and Mallow Search and Rescue used sonar equipment to comb a large stretch of the River Lee in the city throughout daylight hours yesterday.
However, the search was called off after 4pm without finding any trace of Caolan.
The area of the search will be extended today to cover a larger area of the river downstream of Custom House Quay.
Although there were no sightings of the missing teenager entering the water, there are growing fears that he may have fallen in the river at some stage.
Caolan, who is from Rochestown in Cork city, is a first-year engineering student at UCC.
He was last seen at 1.07am on Saturday walking over South Gate Bridge and turning right up towards French’s Quay and the Dean’s Hall area of thecity.
The River Lee was being searched yesterday and volunteers were also combing parts of the southside of the city in a bid to track Caolan down as news of his disappearance was widely publicised on social media websites.
The missing student is a past pupil of CBC Cork and is a member of Douglas GAA club.
He is a talented sportsman and plays hurling, rugby and Gaelic football. On the evening before he went missing he attended a Christmas party at Cubins nightclub with his friends from UCC.
