Woman denies her driving killed man

A WOMAN has denied dangerous driving causing the death of former inter-county footballer Declan Hayes.

At Ennis Circuit Court, Lisa Clancy, aged 25, of 2 Inchiquin Park, Corofin, Co Clare, pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Declan Hayes at Toonagh, Tulla, Co Clare, on October 26, 2010.

Mr Hayes, aged 43, of Doonmore, Doonbeg, Co Clare, who was single, was driving a motorcycle on the main Ennis to Tulla Road.

Along with representing Clare and winning four county championship medals with his club, Doonbeg, Mr Hayes also represented Ireland in athletics.

Mr Hayes died less than a mile from where he worked on the construction of a new Clare County Board GAA training facility at Caherlohan, near Tulla.

The incident occurred months after Mr Hayes had recovered from a serious crash in August 2009, which left him in hospital for several months.

Judge Donagh McDonagh adjourned the case to today. The case is expected to last around two days.
