Lighthouse opening proves a big draw for tourists
The doors to the 19th century building were opened last Monday week as part of a trial visitor scheme that will continue until September 4, arising from a decision by Clare County Council.
The lighthouse at Loophead was first established in 1670 and the current tower-style lighthouse building was constructed in 1854 and was operated and maintained by a keeper who lived there.
However, marketing and development officer with Kilrush Town Council, Siobhan Garvey said: âIn excess of 2,200 people visited Loop Head Lighthouse between Monday and Sunday last. Local tourism operators have reported a surge in business during this period as a result. We have also extended the opening hours to 5.30pm to accommodate those wishing to visit the landmark.â
She added: âWe are delighted that so many people have availed of the opportunity to enjoy the guided tour to the top of the lighthouse, as well as witness the stunning views of the Shannon Estuary and Atlantic Ocean. Just over half of all visitors have been Irish.â
Ms Garvey noted the large visitor numbers had necessitated the employment of additional staff.
âSix staff were originally recruited but due to the volume of visitors and the attractionâs popularity, an additional four staff were recruited last week. The two part-time and eight full-time staff are all living locallyâ, she stated.
* Loop Head Lighthouse is open to the public from 10am to 5.30pm.
