EU road safety plan opt-out

INTERNATIONAL road safety experts have expressed concern that Ireland may opt out of proposals to introduce measures for the cross-border enforcement of traffic offences.

These include speeding, drink-driving and the non-wearing of seat belts.

The European Transport Safety Council has urged the new government to support the EU’s plans.

Ireland and Britain have signalled their intention to delay their opt-in procedure. They are not automatically covered by the directive, agreed by the EU council of transport ministers in December.
