German police recover jewellery stolen in Fermoy raid
The jewellery was discovered in a Dublin-registered car which was stopped on an autobahn near the Austrian border on February 4, just five days after the robbery took place at Barbers jewellers in Fermoy.
Two foreign nationals in the car were arrested and German police also recovered a quantity of drugs after searching the vehicle.
German police were able to match the jewellery as gardaí had posted a description of the missing items to Interpol.
German police contacted gardaí last weekend to inform them they had recovered some of the stolen items, but not all.
The two police forces are now liaising on the case and it is expected that the jewellery will be returned to its rightful owners after a court case is concluded.
On the night of January 30 last, raiders got into the back of the jewellers by climbing onto the adjoining roof of the former co-op in St Patrick Street, Fermoy.
They then forced open a skylight on the roof of the jewellers and walked downstairs to the shop’s ground floor where they took a large quantity or rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches.
