Former airport terminal to host international art event
Some of the world’s leading and emerging international artists, musicians and theorists have been lined up to take part in Terminal Convention 2011 at the disused Cork Airport building.
Several events will also take place in city centre music venues.
The concept, which was announced last night, has been developed by Static Gallery, Liverpool, in collaboration with the National Sculpture Factory and will be the subject of a publication and documentary.
The former airport, decommissioned in 2006 when a new airport terminal was built alongside, will host four linked elements — an exhibition, a symposium, a music event and an art fair — between March 17 and 27.
Terminal Convention curator Peter Gorschlüter, the deputy director of MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, in Frankfurt, said he is looking forward to the site being reopened after years of abandonment.
“The site has preserved the traces of its past and has assumed a personal, almost humanlike identity, flickering technology and infrastructure, personal goods and permanently lost property, airport diaries and broken display cases are being reactivated to unfold new life through the interventions and works by over 20 international artists,” he said.
National Sculpture Factory director Mary McCarthy said: “The old terminal in Cork is rich in memories for the people in Cork and the region and this project creates exciting opportunities for artists to respond and for the public to visit and engage with these works as well as have a peek around a place that was once our point of departure,” she said.
CIT Crawford College of Art & Design and Liverpool John Moores University School of Art and Design will host a symposium for academics, thinkers, theorists and activists.
The terminal will host three music events.
An art fair will be staged in the terminal’s old departures hall.
