Two men remanded over attempted ATM raid

Thomas Wilson, 29, of 6 Sea Patrick Villas, Banbridge, Co Down, and Christopher Murney, 24, of 39 Chapel Hill Road, Mayobridge, Co Down, appeared in custody at Killarney District Court.

Solicitor Padraig O’Connell, who had told a previous court sitting that both men were unemployed and in receipt of £50 (€58) per week in unemployment benefit, made an application for legal aid.

Garda Inspector Barry O’Rourke confirmed the circumstances of the men.

The accused have been charged with stealing the ATM, property of Ger O’Brien, manager of AIB, at Main Street, Castleisland, on November 13, and with criminally damaging the front wall of the bank on the same date.

While no application was made for bail, Inspector O’Rourke indicated the state would object to bail.

When the accused were brought before a special court in Killorglin on Sunday, Detective Sergeant Padraig Sears of Killarney said Gardaí would not be able to supervise their movements outside the jurisdiction and there would be a risk of flight.

The court was also told the state would be seeking to prefer further serious charges.

Mr O’Connell said he would be applying for bail in the High Court on Monday.

Judge James O’Connor remanded both accused in custody to Castleisland District Court on November 25.
