Limerick school creates world’s biggest pom pom

A LIMERICK school has wound its way through over 170 balls of wool to earn a world record.

The pupils of Salesian Primary School in Fernbank were celebrating at the weekend after the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed they have earned a place in the book as the creators of the world’s biggest pom pom.

The record-breaking attempt has been rubber-stamped and certified and the school will be entered in the next edition of the coveted book of world records.

The pupils of sixth class spent months making the giant ball of wool.

They wound their way through over 170 balls of wool to make the 1.21 metre high (4ft), 3.25 metres wide (10’8”) diameter record-breaking pom pom.

It is currently being stored in the school hall while arrangements are made to find a permanent display for it.

Teacher Judith Hurley praised everyone involved in breaking the record.

Each of the 31 sixth class pupils was involved so that each child felt their contribution was vital to the overall result, she said.

Ms Hurley, who is also a past pupil of the school, said she got her inspiration for the project from the type of education she received while attending the school as a student.

She also said the school is known not only for its academic achievements, but also for its “truly holistic education”.
