Advertising campaign aims to attract more than 100 garda trainees

MORE than 100 trainee gardaí could be taken on at the end of the year in the first wave of new recruits since the public sector jobs moratorium was introduced.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said an advertising campaign would run over the next few weeks to attract people to register interest in joining the force.

It is hoped a new batch of trainees could start at the Garda College in Templemore towards the end of the year.
