Workforce boost: 200 positions to be created at new €66m research centre

ABOUT 200 jobs will be created with the establishment of an innovative research centre in Dublin.

Software specialists will join forces with local authorities, academics and business leaders to devise ways of better connecting transport, water and energy systems.

Newly appointed Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation Batt O’Keeffe said the €66 million project was a major endorsement of the country and its workforce.

“I wish every morning was like this morning – my first day in office and a good announcement,” he said.

“The decision by IBM underscores the Irish Government’s commitment to providing an environment where industry and academia can collaborate to create economic growth through innovation and research.”

IBM, which employs more than 3,000 people nationwide, is setting up the new centre in Mulhuddart, north-west Dublin.

IBM’s general manager in Ireland Michael Daly said the IDA-supported project was another step in the firm’s drive for improving quality and knowledge.

“This is going to position Dublin as a smarter city,” he added. “We believe we have reached a tipping point in the role technology can play in making our world a better place.”
