AN unconscious man rushed to the A&E department in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital had to be treated on a trolley as no ward bed was available.

Former health minister Michael Noonan, who revealed the incident yesterday, said the closure of A&E departments in Nenagh, Ennis and St John’s in Limerick will make matters worse at the under-resourced A&E at the main regional hospital.

He said: “There were 18 patients on trolleys this morning after one of the finest weekends — weather-wise — of the year with no epidemic of any sort around. How are they going to cater for people from Nenagh and Ennis? For a Monday morning this is extremely high.
