Bereaved husband to meet Harney
Ann Moriarty, who died on April 25 this year, aged 53, was twice given the all-clear for cancer following tests last year at Ennis General Hospital. She was also declared to be free of any recurrence of her cancer during a regular check-up in St James’s Hospital in Dublin just over a year ago.
Ms Harney, who invited Mr Henry to meet her on Thursday, said cancer reform was needed in the light of misdiagnosis instances such as that of Mr Henry’s wife. Ms Harney said people reporting such cases needed ensure that they were not causing confidence to be lost in the health system. She also pointed out a case such as the late Ms Moriarty’s would have been swept under the carpet in the past.
Mr Henry, who welcomed the opportunity to meet Ms Harney next Wednesday, said he had been heartened by the many expressions of support he had received from all over the country since he went public on how his wife was treated by the State health service.
“Ann’s story appears to have touched a nerve or recognition within so many individuals and I now feel even more determined to obtain justice for Ann and sorely needed improvements in the way our hospitals are run,” he said yesterday.
