14,000 pupils tackle programme with distinction

MORE than 14,000 students sat the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme this year with almost 2,000 awarded distinctions, and more than 7,000 receiving merits.

Often confused with the Applied Leaving Cert, the programme was introduced in 1994 in response to the country’s changing work and business environment.

The LCVP combines the academic strengths of the Leaving Certificate with a focus on self-directed learning, innovation and enterprise.

Available in two out of three secondary schools, candidates taking it must study at least five Leaving Certificate subjects, one of which must be Irish, as well as the two link modules — preparation for the world of work and enterprise education.

In addition to taking an exam, students assemble a portfolio over two years, which is assessed at the end of the final year of the Leaving Certificate.

A spokeswoman for the Second Level Support Service said the programme and its benefits are often lost but it is a great way for students to learn practical skills — and bump up their CAO points.

“Last year, 81% of students used the LCVP as their sixth subject on CAO forms,” she said.

“Students love it because 60% of the subject is graded on a portfolio and 40% is the written exam.

“It improves communication and really prepares students for the world of work. It is practical and activities based.”

The primary goal of the LCVP is to prepare young people for adult life by ensuring that they are educated in the broadest sense, with an ability to cope and thrive in an environment of rapid change. Participants in the programme are encouraged to develop skills and competencies fundamental to both academic and vocational success.
