Artists ready for folk festival
An Spailpín Fánach, opposite the Beamish brewery in South Main Street, is home to three days of live performances of artists from Cork, Waterford and Limerick from tomorrow night.
Over the weekend, the public is also invited on a free walking tour of Cork — accompanied by performers singing songs about historic areas.
The walk is on Saturday at 2pm from O’Reilly’s Bar in Old Youghal Road near the Collins Barracks.
“At the festival we’ll have a blend of new artists and more established performers and a variety of singers in between,” said organiser Jim Walsh of the Cork Singers’ Club.
“We’ve also got an event where people can learn an Irish or English song — and last year a guy who was doing the sound gave it a go and was surprised about how enjoyable it was.”
The weekend festival kicks off at 8pm tomorrow with music and a talk by Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, formerly lead singer in Danú.
At 9.30pm performers from Limerick take to the stage for a “Thomond Meets Cork” music spot.
The festival’s annual song concert is at 9pm on Saturday. Young singers under the billing An Ghlúin Óg kick off Sunday’s music, which ends with Conor and Jessie Anthony on stage at 8pm. Admission costs €5 to €10 but a weekend pass is available for €30 from 087-2759311.
