MUNSTER is facing a waste crisis because its local authorities won’t be capable of disposing of all non-recyclables in the next few years, it was claimed yesterday.

Greenstar executives, who want permission to open a controversial €20 million superdump on the Cork/Limerick border, told a Bord Pleanála hearing that the region is facing an “impending waste crisis,” with an estimated 300,000 tonnes per annum shortfall in landfill capacity.

Greenstar’s head of landfill operations Margaret Heavey claimed that if Cork County Council’s proposed waste facility at Bottlehill opened in 2012, there would still be a 150,000 tonnes per annum shortfall in capacity in the county.
