Fresh appeal for help in catching Raonaid’s killer

THERE are people with vital information in relation to the brutal murder of teenager Raonaid Murray eight years ago who still haven’t come forward, gardaí believe.

Fresh appeal for help in catching Raonaid’s killer

Investigating officers yesterday released details — including an artist’s impression — of the main suspect for the “apparently motiveless” attack on the 17-year-old.

The Leaving Cert student was stabbed to death just yards from her home in Glenageary, south Dublin, on September 4, 1999. On the eighth anniversary of her murder, gardaí yesterday issued a statement. “Gardaí at Dún Laoghaire are continuing their investigation into the murder of Raonaid Murray.”

Detectives are focusing on a key suspect seen arguing with Ms Murray that night. He is described as about 25 years old, 5ft10, good looking and with a slim, athletic build. He had unkempt sandy-coloured hair in “Oasis” style.

He wore casual trendy clothes, including light coloured combat trousers, round-necked beige/brown jumper/sweatshirt, which appeared worn looking.

Raonaid was seen walking along Corrig Avenue in Dún Laoghaire in the company of this man at about 11.50pm on September 3.

Raonaid had left Scott’s pub in Dún Laoghaire at 11.20pm. Her body was found at Silchester Crescent in Glenageary at 12.40am, only 500 yards from her home.

“Gardaí believe Raonaid was attacked between midnight and 12.10am. The walk from Dún Laoghaire is approximately 15 minutes consequently there is a period of 20 to 35 minutes in Raonaid’s last movements that has not been accounted for.” The statement also said Raonaid was 5.5ft, wore a blue short-sleeved top, dark trousers, black platform ankle boots with a four-inch heel. She also carried a distinctive shopping bag from the “Sally West” ladies boutique.

“The Murray family appeal to the public for any information. The solving of this murder remains a top priority for An Garda Síochána,” the statement said.
