A MAN has died after the car he was driving lost control and hit a concrete post, bringing to three the number of people killed on Irish roads since Friday.

The accident happened at Brittas, Thurles, Co Tipperary, at 7.35am on Saturday.

The man died in hospital from his injuries yesterday morning.

He was a 41-year-old foreigner.

A Garda spokesman said: “A car went out of control and struck a concrete post.

“The driver of the car, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was seriously injured and removed to hospital. He died early this morning.”

No other vehicles were involved.

Meanwhile, an 85-year-old woman who died on Friday evening has been named as Catherine Teresa Daly from Nohoval, Rathmore, Co Kerry.

She died when the car driven by her husband was in a collision with a van on the N72 between Killarney and Mallow on the Cork-Kerry border.

In a separate accident, a man aged 58 was killed on Friday night when he was struck by a car while walking along a road in Co Leitrim.

The pedestrian was on the road at Tomrud, Manorhamilton, when the accident happened.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the accident to contact them.

About the same time eight people were injured in a serious road accident on the Cavan bypass.

The collision, at about 10pm on Friday, involved two vehicles. Eight people were taken to Cavan General Hospital suffering from a variety of injuries.

It was the second multiple pile-up of the day.

Seven people were brought to hospital in a stable condition after a serious crash involving four cars in Co Westmeath at about 1.30pm at Ballybeg, on the N61 between Athlone and Roscommon.
