Four killed on roads over weekend
Three people died in separate road crashes on Saturday in counties Dublin, Tipperary and Meath.
A fourth victim — a 64 year-old man — lost his life on Saturday afternoon following a collision near Monasterevin, Co Kildare between the car he was driving and a truck.
He was last night named as Patrick Phelan from Ashfield Gardens, Portlaoise.
A man was questioned in connection with the crash, which happened on the M7 between New Inn and Monasterevin. His female passenger, who was taken to Portlaoise Midland Regional Hospital, was critically injured.
A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the incident.
Early yesterday morning a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed when he crashed on the Burton Hall Road, Leopardstown in south Dublin.
After the 4am crash, the road was closed for a time while gardaí carried out an examination of the scene.
A 44 year-old male pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle at Racket Hall, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, at 10.35pm on Saturday. He has been named as James Mc Mahon from Assumption Park, Roscrea.
A front seat male passenger in his 40s was killed in a two-car collision on the outskirts of Navan, Co Meath, on Saturday night.
The smash happened on the N3 just south of Navan beside the new bridge over the River Boyne at 8.55pm.
The two drivers were detained in hospital overnight and were described as “comfortable”.
