THE relocation project for a learning disability unit in Carlow has got underway, with a sod-turning ceremony on the grounds of St Dympna’s Hospital.

Kelvin Grove is a learning disability unit attached to the Health Service Executive’s mental health services in Carlow/Kilkenny.

Local community services health manager Anna Marie Lanigan and mental health and elderly care services manager Mary O’Hanlon officiated at the sod-turning ceremony, while staff and management were also present.

The HSE has been

advancing the project to relocate existing service users at Kelvin Grove into purpose built accommodation in the grounds of St Dympna’s involves four residential housing units together with an activation building which will enable the provision of day activation programmes for the residents.

The HSE has approved the capital funding for this development, which is expected to be completed during 2008.

“The matter of replacing the existing accommodation at Kelvin Grove has been receiving ongoing and urgent attention and the HSE looks forward to providing the new facilities for this care group. The project aims to relocate 15 clients with a learning disability to state of the art accommodation on a new greenfield site,” said Mary O’Hanlon.
