Library introduces novel approach to learning
Allow them freedom to make lots of noise.
Not only will the facility provide drums on which they can thump, a range of electric guitars will also be available so budding musicians can jam-blast to their hearts’ content.
The joy of the facility at Watch House Cross is it will not intrude on the peace of library readers.
The €3.5 million building that covers 8,000 sq feet has its own sound-proof music room.
Another room has been put aside for toddlers who want to paint, colour or play with pottery. A secluded corner is available for children’s storytelling.
The new library was funded by the Department of Environment and Limerick City Council.
It will serve the communities of Moyross, Kileely and Ballynanty along with other neighbouring estates on the north side of the city.
Library staff have been on a door-to-door canvass in recent weeks advising the public of the wide range of facilities which will be on offer at the new community library in a project named Northside Info-Link.
A spokesman for the city council said: “The Info-Link aim is to provide a pathway to information services in a dedicated space within the new library.”
The new library will also have its own computer suite which will be open to individual members and groups.
The spokesman said: “The best technology is available such as Microsoft Vista, broadband, WiFi and video conferencing. It is anticipated that classes in how to use PCs will be given on a regular basis.
“A language laboratory with a full range of European languages will also be available to anyone wishing to learn a new language or brush up on existing language skills.
“Web cams have also been installed which will capture the image of the individuals pronunciation.”
Microsoft Ireland have donated its ‘unlimited potential programme’.
A company spokesman said: “We believe that, by providing technical skills training, we can partner with people in the community to create social and economic opportunities that can help change people’s lives and transform communities."
