Community to benefit from funding boost for youth services group

WATERFORD Regional Youth Services is today preparing for one of the busiest days on its calendar.

The hard-working group has received a significant funding boost this year, money which will allow it greatly expand its role in the community. The group was remaining tight-lipped about its plans, ahead of today’s launch.

Meanwhile, local TD, Oliver Wilkinson, says extra money granted to sports clubs across the city and county should help curb anti-social behaviour.

The money is all part of a drive by the Government to give young people better facilities and steer them away from crime and anti-social behaviour.

Projects across the city and county were awarded funding in June under the ‘National Lottery funded 2006 Local Sports Capital Programme’.

“Now, projects in Rapid areas — urban zones identified by the Government as priority areas for investment — are to receive top-up funding.

“Almost €250,000 in extra funding is to be invested in sports clubs around the county. I hope the big winners will make full use of the funding and improve their social and recreational outlets for young people ... We in Fianna Fáil will continue to invest in sport and in our young people,” said Deputy Wilkinson.

Among the sports clubs awarded top-up funding were: St Molleran’s GAA Club (€21,000); Mount Sion GAA Club (€39,000); Roanmore Hurling and Football Club (€30,000); St Saviours GAA Club (€24,000); Waterford City Co-St Paul’s CPI (€45,000); Waterford City RFC (€60,000); Waterford Harbour Sub Aqua Club (€3,600); and Waterford Loc Eco Dev Com (€12,000).
