Gardaí make fresh appeal on anniversary of murder

GARDAÍ have interviewed almost 8,000 people and taken more than 3,000 statements but have still not been able to identify the killer of Dublin teenager Raonaid Murray.

Gardaí make fresh appeal on anniversary of murder

On the seventh anniversary of her death yesterday gardaí investigating her killing renewed their appeal for assistance from the public. Raonaid was stabbed to death on her way home from Scott’s pub in Dun Laoghaire on the night of Friday, September 3, 1999.

Gardai believe there are still some people with vital information that could assist the investigation, a spokes- person said.

“The investigation team are appealing for anybody with any information to contact us now, no matter how trivial they feel their information may be.”

The body of the 17-year- old was found at Silchester Crescent in Glenageary, less than a kilometre from her home.

Detective Inspector Eamon O’Reilly, of Dun Laoghaire station, said there were a number of sightings of people, made while Raonaid was on her way home on the night of her death, whom the gardaí had appealed to come forward.

“We still haven’t interviewed these people — and they form part of the full picture of what happened on the night.

“We are anxious — even at this late stage — to talk to these people and put them in or out of the picture,” said Det Insp O’Reilly.

Raonaid left the pub at 11.20pm and her body was found at 12.40am. Gardaí believe she was attacked between midnight and 12.10am, leaving a period of 20 to 30 minutes during which her movements cannot be accounted for.

They also said Raonaid lost a lot of blood and it was likely her blood would have been on the clothing of her killer.

Detectives are particularly anxious to hear from anybody who can say where Raonaid was from 11.20pm until her body was found more than an hour later.
