Man stabbed after confronting vandals

The latest attack in Youghal at the weekend brought to three the number of knife attacks in Cork since Friday night.

It is the latest in a worrying surge of knife attacks — two of which were fatal — in recent weeks.

And two young men from Waterford who were beaten in an unprovoked attack while visiting Cork city on Saturday night were released from hospital yesterday.

The men are believed to have lost their way in the Firkin Crane area of Shandon while making their way back to their accommodation at MacCurtain Street. They stopped a group of youths for directions but were severely beaten by the gang, before being robbed.

Gardaí believe that up to 10 teenagers were involved in the assault and they are following a number of lines of inquiries.

Anyone with information should contact gardaí at Watercourse Road on 021 4501498.

The man injured in Youghal is recovering in Cork University Hospital.

The victim, who is in his early 30s, was stabbed after confronting a gang of youths who were throwing stones at his house in the Greens’ Quay area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A car was also burned out in the Cork Hill area of the town and a Travellers’ caravan was burned out near Dominic Collin’s Place.

The caravan was unoccupied at the time.

Several cars were damaged in two car parks at the northern end of town earlier.

Meanwhile, gardaí are still investigating two other stabbings in the city over the weekend.

A 24-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach with a carving knife after a row outside Murphy’s Rock Pub in Ballyvolane in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Gardaí have interviewed a number of people who were in the pub but the victim, who was in a stable condition in Cork University Hospital last night, has not made an official complaint to gardaí.

And the man who was stabbed several times in the arm by a gang of masked youths in the St John’s Well area of the city was discharged from hospital yesterday.

It is believed that attack is linked to an ongoing feud between two rival gangs in the area.
