Volunteers needed to work with the homeless

CAMPAIGNERS for the homeless are tomorrow launching an urgent appeal for volunteers to work with down-and-outs in emergency shelters, on the streets and in supported housing.

Entertainer Brian Ormond, from television’s You’re a Star, will be launching the appeal for the Simon Communities of Ireland charity, which has one in six volunteer posts empty.

A spokeswoman said: “Fewer people seem to have come forward to volunteer this year but we need full-time people to continue the vital work we do.

“We are even advertising in washrooms and bars for volunteers and we are hoping to get people who are thinking of going to college or who are in mid-career and looking for a change.”

The charity needs helpers for its residential and shelter projects for the homeless in Dundalk, Co Louth and in Cork.

Bosses say they have successfully recruited from abroad in the past to fill vacancies with helpers coming from as far away as Brazil, Germany and even China.

Volunteer co-ordinator Noeleen O’Callaghan said: “Working as a volunteer can prove invaluable in pursuing careers in social services and other care professions.

“This opportunity is also the perfect way for young people to take time out before making major decisions about further education and their careers.”

The charity’s launch will be at the Noto Caffe cafe in Thomas Street, Dublin 8, at noon.

Volunteers will be on hand to talk about their experiences.
