Car shooting linked to ongoing feud between rival gangs, say gardaí

GARDAÍ investigating an incident in which a shot was fired at an unoccupied car in the Moyross area early yesterday morning believe the attack is linked to the ongoing feud between rival gangs in the northside of the city.

The shot was discharged from a shotgun through the back window of a car parked outside a house in Cosgrave Park at 2.45pm

“We are trying to establish a motive for this latest attack which we believe is linked to an ongoing feud,” said a garda spokesman at Henry Street Station.

The bitter bloody feud has already claimed three lives.

Gardaí point out that the owner of the damaged car has nothing whatsoever to do with the feuding factions. This is the third time the householder has been targeted.

The windows of his car had been previously smashed.

A major garda investigation is continuing into the murder of 47-year-old John Ryan in a drive-by shooting while working on a garden patio in the Thomondgate area on July 7 last.

Eleven people have already been questioned and released without charge in connection with this gangland murder.

“A file is being prepared for the DPP in relation to certain aspects that have come to light in the major investigation and we are still pursuing certain lines of inquiry into the murder,” said a garda spokesman yesterday.

Meanwhile, a man in his thirties who was detained for almost 48 hours at Henry Street Station by gardaí in Limerick on suspicion of being a member of the Continuity IRA was yesterday released without charge.

The man, who was arrested in the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city on Wednesday, was also questioned about alleged importation of arms.

“The man has been released without charge and a file is being sent to the DPP,” said a garda spokesman.

The arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of dissident Republicans in the city.
