From this ... to this ... all under the one roof
The owners of one of Cork city centre’s most lucrative entertainment venues have now opened a state-of-the-art gym and fitness centre right over their pub.
Paul Montgomery, and his wife Margaret Kenneally, have ploughed over €2 million into the development of The Locker Room, which covers two floors over their Rearden’s pub complex on Washington Street.
The 13,000 sq ft members-only club is targeted at city-based clientele.
Marketing manager Norma Murphy said the centre should appeal especially to people looking for a complete early-morning or lunchtime workout.
The gym has a range of cardiovascular machines, including sunken treadmills and a free-weights section. It also offers fitness classes, yoga and pilates, treatment rooms, steam rooms, saunas, and a tanning room for both men and women.
The Locker Room also boasts a smart-card personal training computer system, Fitlynxx.
It provides each member with a PIN number and an individual training schedule which can be viewed on touch-screens dotted around the gym.
The club’s golf academy will be run by scratch player, Lloyd Hutchinson, just back from the US.
“We will be encouraging people to also look at the gym training side of golf,” he said.
Gym instructor Damien McSweeney said the gym has struck the perfect balance.
“We have equipment for people looking to pump heavy weights, or for those who just want a light workout,” he said.
Christina Cronin, who has an MA in exercise, nutrition and science, will also be on site to give advice on diet and nutrition.
Individual membership costs €495, with a joining fee of €75. Couple and student rates are also available, while corporate rates are being discussed.
The gym will be open Monday to Friday, 7am to 10pm and from 9am to 9pm, Saturdays and Sundays.
