Lift off for bright sparks in the space race

MOVE over, NASA. FÁS, Ireland’s answer to the space race, is about to launch a rocket in your direction.

Lift off for bright sparks in the space race

It’s all part of an Irish space programme involving 12 science graduates who have been chosen to take part in the first ever Irish Discover Science Programme, to be run at the Florida Space Institute.

Discover Science is an initiative developed by FÁS to encourage greater participation in the Sciences across all disciplines and for all ages.

The programme even involves building a rocket and launching it into orbit. That’s something that particularly excites those taking part. Among the graduates is Killian O’Driscoll, from Kenmare, Co Kerry, a graduate of University College Cork. He is currently working on his PhD in electrical engineering, specialising in satellite navigation systems.

“It will be great. I am looking forward to it,” said Killian.

Another bright spark, Julie Behan, 23, from Shanagolden, Co Limerick, is equally excited at the prospect of going to Florida. Her discipline is electronic engineering and she has already helped design working models of autonomous robots to aid the disabled and infirm.

“They are the kind of robots that can control themselves and find their own way around. They work on the same principles as those used by NASA,” said Julie.
