Students face school ban for having bad hair day

Students at Nenagh CBS have been warned they will be sent home from school if they have dyed or scraggy, long hair.

The warning came in a letter circulated to parents by the school’s new principal, Ray Cowan.

The letter outlines school rules to parents or guardians and states: “The wearing of earrings and other such jewellery is forbidden.

“Hair must be neat and tidy, of natural colour and of moderate length. Any student who deviates from this will be sent home until such time as the problem is resolved.”

He said that students with dyed hair would be given a period of time to grow colour dyes from their hair, while boys with long hair would have to wear it in a pony tail.

“There will be a period of time to let the dye grow out,” said Mr Cowan.

The new principal, who previously taught at St Aloysius College in Athlone, said he is “anxious to set highest possible standards” at the Nenagh school to ensure “an orderly learning environment in which all students can progress to their best ability”.

Mr Cowan added that all rules and regulations were for the common good of the students and that “common sense and good practice will always prevail” in relation to school rules.

Students at the Nenagh School are also expected to wear proper footwear. “It is a requirement that student footwear be of a shoe style (not runners or boots) and black in colour,” the letter sent to parents reads.
