‘Role of family carer must be recognised’

THE need for greater recognition of the family carer will be highlighted at a major conference, in Tralee, Co Kerry this weekend.

‘Role of family carer must be recognised’

More than 500 carers from all over Ireland will attend the 15th National Carers’ Conference.

Representatives of caring organisations from Germany and the US will also be there.

Partnership in caring, the key role of the family carer, will be the theme of the conference to be officially opened by junior health minister Sean Power.

Speakers will include Medical Council president Dr John Hillery; Dr Alvaro Ramirez, project leader European Autism Information System; Brigid Barron, director of Caring for Carers Ireland; MEP Kathy Sinnott and Mary McMahon, chief executive of Caring for Carers Ireland.

Ms McMahon last night said the family carer was essential to the delivery of ongoing care in the home.

“Caring for Carers calls for a new partnership approach to community-based services. All service providers must recognise the key role of the family carer.

“The family carer needs to be drawn into a partnership with healthcare professionals and service providers to ensure that a safe and integrated health, social and welfare system be delivered.”

Ms McMahon said the family continued to be the strongest and most reliable source of care.

“Greater numbers of older people, people with disabilities and those of all ages who are chronically ill, continue to receive care in their own homes.

“Due to the increased demands and complexity of care required, a new approach to service provision is essential.”
