Smooth delivery for quad squad
Cork parents celebrating the birth of quadruplets yesterday were advised to get plenty of help when they get home.
The quads, born at the city’s Erinville Maternity Hospital just after 9am, were said to be “stable and doing well” last night.
They are likely to remain in the hospital’s neo-natal unit for several weeks.
Hospital general manager Nora Geary said their mother, whose identity was not revealed, was also doing well.
“The advice I’d give people going home with four babies is they’re going to need lots of help,” she said.
“They are a Cork family but that’s all I can say to protect their privacy.”
It is understood that the family may be from Cork’s northside.
The tiny babies - two boys weighing 3lbs 9.9ozs and 4lbs 1.2ozs and two girls both weighing 3lbs 8.5ozs - were born prematurely within two minutes of each other.
They were delivered by caesarean section.
The boys were born first.
The babies have yet to be named. Ms Geary said the preparation for yesterday’s birth had been under way for several weeks.
Ten doctors, eight midwives, medics, radiographers and catering, portering, theatre and support staff, led by consultant obstetrician Dr John Coulter, were involved.
“Their first 24 to 48 hours will be very important. But we are very happy with their weight,” Dr Coulter said.
“They are in good shape and in good hands. Medically we needed a dedicated team for every baby. We’re delighted with the way it went,” he added.
