Waterford gears up for Tall Ships to drop anchor
Four hundred gardaí will police the city streets from July 6 to 9. They will have the support of the horse, dog and water units as well as the garda helicopter service, Superintendent Dave Sheahan has said.
Gardaí and security staff will not tolerate any unruly behaviour, he said. “We are asking people to drink in moderation. It will be a fun, family event.”
While a handful of traders in the city say they will be inconvenienced, the organisers say that those awaiting permits will get them over the coming days, according to Paddy Power, Director of Services with Waterford City Council.
“Those who are worried about permits are advised that they are ready and will be issued in the coming days. Permits will be issued for essential traffic coming in,” he added.
A traffic cordon has been set up in and around the city and only those with special passes will be allowed through, he said.
That cordon will take in Bridge Street, Summerhill, Military Road, Morrison’s Road, Cannon Street, Ashe Road, Inner Ring Road, Richardson’s Folly, Upper Grange Road and the Outer Ring Road.
It will operate around the city from 6.45am-11pm daily on Wednesday-Friday, July 6 to 8 with less restrictions in place on the morning of Saturday, July 9.
At the perimeter of the cordon, clearly signed diversions will be in operation with each restricted entry point to be manned by An Garda Síochána.
Four Park & Ride sites will be in operation at the Airport Road, Killure; IDA Technology Park, Butlerstown; Purcell lands, Newrath and Belmont Park on the Waterford-New Ross road.
Approximately 60 priority buses will convey day-trippers and commuters free-of-charge, to and from these sites to drop-off points in the city centre.
The base for the local and national bus services by Bus Éireann will be moved to a temporary bus depot at the Glen for July 6 to 8.
